Czech Terezín, town in northern Bohemia, was founded by an Austrian Emperor Josef II. as a military fortress. From 1941 to 1945 it was used by Nazi Germany as a walled ghetto, or concentration camp, and as a transit camp for western Jews en route to Auschwitz and other extermination camps.
Tens of thousands of people died there, some killed outright and others dying from malnutrition and disease.
